The Oklahoma City Hockey Club and owner Jake Runey have announced the additions of Mick Berge and Matt Donovan to the Oklahoma City staff for the 2020-21 season. Mick Berge joins his brother and newly-announced head coach Josh Berge on the bench as an assistant coach, while Donovan joins as a Team Advisor and Scout.
Berge most recently was with Dark Horse Athletics in Minnesota, serving as a Lead Instructor. Prior to joining Dark Horse, Berge was behind the bench as an assistant coach for the USHL’s Lincoln Stars, and with the NAHL’s Minot Minotauros. His playing career included stops in the Central Hockey League with the Allen Americans and Texas Brahmas, as well as with the ECHL’s South Carolina Stingrays. Berge’s junior career was spent with the Lincoln Stars, before joining Minnesota State University – Mankato for college.
“I am excited to work alongside my brother in the city that we both grew up playing in,” said Berge. “I look forward to using my knowledge and experience to help and build a culture of winning and developing players in OKC.”
Another Oklahoma City-native, Matt Donovan owns the distinction of being the first player born, raised, and trained in Oklahoma to play in the National Hockey League. Drafted by the New York Islanders as the 96th overall selection, Donovan has played in 69 career NHL games with the Islanders and Nashville Predators. Donovan is currently with the American Hockey League’s Milwaukee Admirals, signing a two-year AHL contract extension that runs through the 2021-22 season.
“I am happy to be helping out a lifelong friend in Josh Berge, and helping bring a high level of Junior Hockey to where we grew up,” stated Donovan. “I hope to help out as much as I can with bringing great hockey players to OKC and helping Josh build a winning organization while continuing my professional hockey career with the Milwaukee Admirals.”
Donovan spent his junior career with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders of the USHL before moving to college with the University of Denver in the NCAA. Donovan also spent two seasons in the Swedish Hockey League with Frölunda HC, netting 42 points in 102 games played.
